The highly-anticipated Ethos Self-Custody Vault launched on Android devices worldwide as well as a private beta through Apple TestFlight.

The founders of Ethos include the father/son team Shingo and Adam Lavine who built the crypto infrastructure for Voyager Digital.  The team left Voyager, and were subsequently dismayed to see their work demolished in the centralized meltdown of 2022.  They recruited industry veterans and reassembled the original Ethos team to create a next-generation self-custody super app.

The patent-pending Magic Key technology enables anybody to create a private key, then shard, backup and restore the key by remembering a few “safe words”.  This technical advancement, using multi-party cryptography techniques, vastly simplifies the process of holding a private key.

“People historically had a choice between centralized custody – like Voyager, Celsius and FTX – or managing the risk and technical burden of a private key,” said Shingo Lavine.  “The Ethos Self-Custody Vault gives people a third option of a highly secure yet easy-to-use self-custody system.”

The Ethos Self-Custody Vault is Ethereum-based, and enables creation of a BIP32-compatible private key called Magic Keys.  A user can shard their Magic Key, then create a backup file with two of the shards.
