6 – Ethos Universal Wallet – SmartKey & Security

6.1 What is a SmartKey? One Key to Manage Multiple Wallets

A SmartKey is an Ethos service which lets users create a single key for all of their cryptocurrency wallets. The underlying technology is from a Bitcoin Improvement Proposal – or BIP – commonly known as BIP32.

Using BIP32, a single 256- bit seed (or small piece of data) can encrypt information for multiple wallets addresses across multiple blockchains. Even better, these wallets can be nested like a folder structure. This is known as Hierarchical Deterministic Wallets, and is an enormously powerful mathematical structure.

Ethos integrated this technology into what is called a SmartKey. This means consumers can have the convenience of a single key that is represented by a 24-word phrase that can secure all of their wallets. While this might sound mind-boggling, there are estimated to be a billion possible SmartKeys for every atom on planet Earth, so you can rest easy knowing that your key is yours alone. Your SmartKey will never touch the internet and is not stored by Ethos.

Your SmartKey lets you take unprecedented control of your assets and lays the foundation for an open, safe and fair financial ecosystem for everyone.

6.2 Does Ethos have a Copy of my Private Keys?

No, Ethos does not have a copy of your private keys.

6.3 Biometric Authentication and Pin

In order to send coins from your wallet, you are required to input your PIN and optionally use an additional layer of biometric authentication (like FaceID or fingerprint). We highly recommend implementing biometric authentication if your device permits it.

6.4 Recovering Your Password & Account

Uh-oh… so you created an account but forgot your Username or Password? No problem! We’ve got your back.

When you open the Ethos app, simply tap ‘Forgot Password’ or ‘Forgot Username’ below the ‘Sign In’ button and you will be able to recover your username or reset your password.

If you do not receive an email from Ethos within 5 minutes of trying to reset your username, your username was not associated with that email address. If you need further assistance, please contact support through support.ethos.io.

7 – SmartWallet – User Guide

  5. Follow the onscreen instructions and document and securely store your 24-word Smart Key. Download this PDF to safely record and store your SmartKey Recovery Phrase in a safe place.
  • You will be asked to shake your phone – this is one of many sources of random data the Universal Wallet uses in generating a unique SmartKey for you.
  • Important: Generate and document your SmartKey in private at all costs. Avoid cameras, windows, and any potential onlookers.
  • It’s recommended that you write this down on a piece of paper and store it offline in a secure location. Never (ever) take screenshots, pictures, or save the 24-words on your computer. If someone gains access to your SmartKey, they have access to your assets.

8.4 Does Ethos Charge Fees to Use the Universal Wallet?

The basic functions of the wallet are free to use! Ethos will not charge you to deposit or withdraw your coins. The only costs involved will be the transaction fees that fuel each blockchain, these are sometimes referred to as miner fees. On the Ethereum platform, each transaction that is performed costs gas. This small fee is awarded to miners as compensation for the computational resources they provide the network to process the transaction.

8.5 How to Track Transactions on the Blockchain

Thankfully, using the QR-scanner or copying and pasting an address are ways to ensure your funds go where they are meant to, but that sometimes isn’t enough for comfort and that’s why the Ethos Universal Wallet makes it easy for you to track the progress of your transactions.

  1. Select the Menu button in the upper left corner.
  2. Tap ‘Transactions History’
  3. Select the wallet for which wish to check the transaction history.
  4. Here, you can view the total value of the transaction, time of the transaction, # of confirmations, the address the transaction is being sent to/from, and the TX-hash.
  5. For more details, select the copy icon next to the TX-hash.
  6. Paste and search that address in your browser and you will be brought to a block explorer where you can find more information on your transaction.

11 – BIP39 Recovery Tool

What is a BIP39 Recovery Tool?

BIP stands for Bitcoin Improvement Proposal.

A BIP is a standardized way of introducing proposals for alterations to a variety of elements of Bitcoin, including the network protocol, block or transaction validation, design issues, or general guidelines.

So how does BIP39 tie into my SmartWallet and SmartKey? When creating a cryptocurrency wallet, a mnemonic phrase (also referred to as a ‘seed phrase‘) is sometimes generated in order to provide an easier way to remember your private key. Imagine how hard it would be to memorize, or even accurately copy, a long alphanumeric string!

BIP39 provides a framework for generating that mnemonic (seed) phrase. With the  BIP39 framework, standardized lists of words in different languages are provided and can be used for creating a seed phrase. The English language word list has 2048 words and can be found here. The number of possible 24 word combinations of 2048 words exceeds the number of atoms on Earth – i.e. virtually limitless and therefore very secure.

11.1 Who would use the BIP39 Recovery Tool

You would use the BIP39 Recovery Tool if you have lost access to your account and lost access to your email, have participated in an ICO for a token or coin that is not yet supported by the Universal Wallet, or if you need to derive your private keys from the Smartkey for any other reason.

By ensuring you have full access to your private keys at any time through the BIP39 Recovery Tool in addition to the Universal Wallet, you are truly granted full self-custody.

11.2 How to use the BIP39 Recovery Tool

For this you go to https://ethos-source.github.io/bip39-web-tool/ or if you want to run it locally you can download the files here.

Please read the warning notification displayed at the top, as if not used properly your assets might be at risk.

Once you’ve read the notifications, please select the Blockchain you want to retrieve your private keys for.

Leave the Mainnet or Testnet on its default “Mainnet”.

You can leave the starting wallet index and amount of wallets to produce on their defaults as well, this will then create the first 10 wallets that would be created with your SmartKey, even if you have not created them in the App yet.

Then Enter your SmartKey and press “Derive Addresses”.

If you entered your SmartKey correctly, you will then see several of the screens below:

Look up the “Address” for which you want to extract the private keys from and copy the private keys.

These can now be used by other Interfaces that allow imports of private keys.

For Bitcoin and Ethereum we recommend Blockchain.com and a “how to” written in this support article:

https://support.blockchain.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000244886-Importing-ether-from-Mist-and-MyEtherWalle

For Erc20 Tokens we recommend MyCrypto.com or MyEtherWallet.com, where you can log in using the “Private Key” function.

If you require any help, please contact support, but never send your SmartKey or Private Key! Ethos Customer Service Representatives will never ask for your SmartKey or Private Key!

16 –Frequently Asked Questions

16.1 When will the Ethos Universal Wallet be Supporting New Coins?

Combining the best of the BIP32, 39, and 44 standards, we built a wallet that will let you hold assets across multiple blockchains. We will be adding new coins on an ongoing basis. For the latest on what is being integrated, check out our Trello board (https://trello.com/b/uCJJgPjM/ethos-trello-board).

16.2 Why Should I Rate this App?

Your ratings will help us go trending in the app-store and ensure others looking for cryptocurrency wallets find the Ethos Universal Wallet.

16.3 Are there any Limits for Crypto Transactions?

No, you can deposit or withdraw as much from your UW as you would like. You control the keys, you control your assets!

16.4 Lost, Stolen, or Damaged Phone

What if someone steals my phone? What if I drop it in the toilet?

These are common questions and valid concerns! But rest assured, your SmartKey will be protected by a PIN + biometric data (optional) and stored in the cryptographic section of the phone.

You would simply need to download the app on a new phone and restore your account using your SmartKey recovery phrase.

16.5 Can I participate in ICOs using the Universal Wallet?

Yes! You can  contribute to a token sale from the Universal Wallet. Before a new token is added to the Universal Walet, it must first pass a vetting process. If the token or coin you purchased is not yet available on the Universal Wallet, they can be retrieved by using the BIP39 Recovery Tool and using a platform like MEW.

16.6 Does Ethos Support Staking of POS Coins?

For coins like NEO, where GAS is collected simply by holding the private keys to a wallet with a NEO balance, we plan to support staking. Other coins require the coin holder to run software on their computer, and in turn the holder is rewarded for their contributions to the network. This software is often not compatible with mobile devices and thus will likely not be supported. Please check back once our desktop application is released!

16.7 Are there Fees to use the Wallet?

The basic functions of the wallet are free to use! Ethos will not charge you to deposit or withdraw your coins. For some blockchains, there are miner fees that are required. On the Ethereum platform, each transaction that is performed costs gas. This small fee is awarded to miners as compensation for the computational resources they provide to the network to process transactions. These fees do NOT go to Ethos.

16.8 Do I need to Store ETHOS in the Wallet to Receive the Airdrops from the Community Airdrop Program?

No! Airdrops are free and require no ETHOS.

16.9 Can a SmartKey be Generated without Shaking the Phone?

No. Multiple sources of entropy (randomness) are used when generating your SmartKey. One of these sources is from the accelerometer in your phone. Shaking your phone generates data that is used in combination with the other sources of entropy to ensure your SmartKey will be random.
